About Chris Highland

Author of ten books, Chris Highland was a Protestant Minister for 14 years and an Interfaith (open-minded, inclusive) Chaplain for 25 years.  He has degrees in Religion and Philosophy from Seattle Pacific University and San Francisco Theological Seminary.  Chris holds both a Community College Teaching Credential and (until recently) a Substitute Teaching Credential from the State of California.  He taught Community Living Skills with adults with disabilities for six years.  He was a counselor with people in jail and on the streets for two decades.  He has been an adjunct instructor at Dominican University in San Rafael and is on the faculty of Cherry Hill Seminary.  In the winter of 2008-2009 and again in 2009-2010 he directed the County Emergency Shelter in Marin.  Currently he is the manager of a senior independent living cooperative in Marin County.

Chris has given public presentations, taught classes and led retreats for congregations, business groups, schools, social service workers and youth leaders.  He has taught in buddhist, christian, jewish, unitarian and other settings.  His educational style is engaging and inspiring, drawing students or audience into an active participation in the subject.

Teaching several courses at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and Dominican University in San Rafael shaped his commitment to develop a clear vision of unity between Nature and Spirit, moving beyond traditional religion to create more integrated paths of meaningful and mindful work. He continues this commitment by offering courses through Cherry Hill Seminary.

Over the past several years he has spoken at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin, Lucas Valley Community Church, Christ Presbyterian Church in Terra Linda, Community Church in Mill Valley, the Marin Interfaith Council, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Tiburon, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Belvedere, the Chaplaincy Institute in Berkeley, Christ Episcopal Church in Sausalito, San Francisco Theological Seminary, Cabrillo College near Santa Cruz and a Rotary club.

Chris is available to give presentations, teach courses or lead retreats in congregations, schools or other settings.  He has long experience creating unique wedding ceremonies as well as memorials, child blessings and other services.
